About the Event

Petroleum ETC Frac School courses are renowned for the balanced presentation of both the theoretical and the practical. This Frac School Course 101 introduces hydraulic fracturing in a truly unique learning environment. The focus of the course is, perceptibly, on fracturing: the universal process for Shale and Conventional plays, rock properties/log analysis, regulatory issues, and specifics of propping agents, frac fluids, and forced closure.

Who Should Attend? 

This course is ideal for Financial Advisors, Sales Professionals (proppants, frac fluids, safety equipment), and Reservoir, Production, or Operations Engineers serving on multidisciplinary asset teams. No prerequisites are required or recommended to attend this course.

Unconventional Thinking or Myths About Hydraulic Fracturing:

"Hydraulic Fracturing with Proppant will Not Work in Carbonate Reservoirs"
"Fracture Volume and Amount of Proppant Should be a Function of Net Pay"

Unconventional Thinking, But True:
Due to the lack of significant barriers to frac height growth, optimization of propped length has very little to do with net pay. If a zone is low permeability and is very thin it may not be economically feasible to design a treatment to properly drain the reservoir.  Myths about "Fracking" will be challenged and put to rest by the experts in petroleum engineering and hydraulic fracturing in this Frac School 101. Thousands of successful treatments have been conducted in carbonate reservoirs. Many of the problems in stimulating carbonate reservoirs, particularly deep reservoirs, are due to near wellbore tortuosity which can be diagnosed and cured with modern technology. Better understanding of well spacing, fracture modeling, flowback and how interfaces in rock layers impact landing points and fracture design is key to reaching that next level of recovery in unconventional  and conventional reservoirs. We have the experts to teach innovation and the facts behind how it works.

About the Instructors

Dr. Scott is the Technology Director for Petroleum Emerging Technology Corporation (Petroleum ETC), an ASME Fellow, and SPE Distinguished Member.  From 2008-2016, he managed the Shell Deepwater Artificial Lift Technology Program and served several years as the Artificial Lift / Pumping Principal Technical Expert (PTE) for Shell, on a global basis.  Before coming to Shell, Scott held the Bethancourt Professorship of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University, was a faculty member at Louisiana State University (LSU), and worked for Phillips Petroleum Company in a variety of roles.  He holds B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Petroleum Engineering and a M.S. degree in Computer Science – all from The University of Tulsa.

Steve Wolhart is the Southern Region Business Development Manager for Liberty Oilfield Services (LOS).  Prior to joining LOS, he worked at Liberty Resources (LR) which is a Denver based operator with properties in the Williston and Powder River basins.  Before that he led Pinnacle (a Halliburton service) and was Director of the Hydraulic Fracture Engineering Center of Excellence at Halliburton.  Responsibilities included the application of advanced fracture diagnostics for optimizing fracture completion, well placement and infill drilling strategies, the design and evaluation of hydraulic fracturing treatments, reservoir engineering, and integrated field studies.  Steve has also worked for the Gas Research Institute and Exxon.  Steve is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and was a Distinguished Lecturer for SPE in 2001-2002.  He has authored or co-authored more than 35 papers on hydraulic fracturing, advanced hydraulic fracture diagnostics, restimulation, and reservoir monitoring.  Steve is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.  He is a graduate of Texas A&M with a degree in mechanical engineering and a MBA from Southern Methodist University.  Learn more

Nick Deutsch is a Hydraulic Fracturing Regulatory Issues Specialist. His client-driven, results-focused approach has allowed him to successfully represent clients of all sizes, from individuals and start-ups to Fortune 500 companies.  He has more than a decade of experience in a wide range of practice areas including complex commercial litigation, eminent domain, and product liability litigation.  His clients come from an array of industries, including Real Estate, Oil & Gas, and Medical Devices.  Nick is licensed in all state and federal courts in Texas as well as the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and he has practiced in courts throughout the nation.  Prior to opening Crump & Deutsch, PLLC, Nick was a Partner at Shook, Hardy, & Bacon, L.L.P. 

Nick received his J.D., with honors, from The University of Texas School of Law, where he was Associate Editor of the Texas Law Review and Justice (President) of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.  He also holds a B.A., Cum Laude, from Southern Methodist University, where he was a Member of Phi Beta Kappa as well as several other honor societies.

In addition to practicing law, Nick is a real estate investor and developer, giving him a unique business perspective on legal matters.  Nick also enjoys classic cars and spending time with his wife, Jen, and their three children.

Dr. Jerry Jenson Petroleum ETC Frac School


Dr. Jerry Jensen joined the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in 2007, after 10 years in the industry (Schlumberger and Gearhart Ind.) and 20 years at academic institutions (Texas A&M and Heriot-Watt Universities). He is co-author of more than 100 publications, including the books: "Statistics for Petroleum Engineers and Geoscientists" Elsevier 2nd Edition, 2000, and reprinted 2003) and "Practical Reservoir Engineering and Characterization" (Elsevier, 2015).

Ray Ellis


Ray graduated from Texas A&I University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Gas Engineering. During his 35-year career, he has focused mostly on tight reservoir stimulation for a significant number of basins in the U.S. and a number of International assignments including: China, Egypt, Argentina, Colombia, and Australia – among others. Before joining Liberty Oilfield Services, he worked in Statoil’s Research and Technology Group as an advisor to their U.S. Onshore Unconventional organization where he was involved in the evaluation and integration of technology for the improvement of completion effectiveness.  He currently holds the position of Regional Technology Manager for the Houston region of Liberty Oilfield Services.

Aaron's career has been focused on the completion of shales and similar unconventional plays that require multistage hydraulic fracturing. In 2015, Burton started Unconventional Oil and Gas Training, a company specializing in training and consulting for unconventional multistage completions. Prior to starting the company, he was with Baker Hughes for nearly 8 years. During his tenure at Baker Hughes he held a variety of roles in operations, business development, and product lines that were focused on multistage completions for hydraulic fracturing. He is an active author and instructor in the industry, authoring a chapter for an award-winning textbook, teaching five SPE continuing education courses, and has a video blog on multistage completions for hydraulic fracturing at Aaron Burton's Blog. He has written a variety of other documents including SPE papers, magazine articles and newsletters, and taught numerous classes to many different audiences and organizations. Also, he has been a discussion leader, presenter, panelist, and participated in many other roles in industry events.

Terry Palisch

Terry is the global engineering director at CARBO Ceramics.  In 2004, Terry joined CARBO Ceramics where he advises clients and his company on completion/fracture optimization. He began his career with ARCO Alaska, where he worked reservoir, completions, operations and new ventures engineering at the Kuparuk River Field.  He later transferred to ARCO International as a Senior Engineering Advisor at the Rhourde El Baguel Field in Algeria. Among his duties, Terry supervised the fracture stimulation program at ARCO's Kuparuk River Field and advised the local Algerian engineering staff on completions and operations activities. He has authored over 40 SPE technical papers, is past Chairman and Board Member of the SPE Dallas Section and member of the ATCE Program committee, including the 2017 Program Chair.  He is currently the Completions Technical Director on the SPEI Board of Directors.  He was the 2012 SPE MidCon Region Completions Optimization & Technology Award winner, the 2015 SPE Dallas Section Engineer of the Year, a 2018 recipient of the SPEI Distinguished Service Award and a Distinguished Member.  Palisch earned his BS in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Missouri – Rolla in 1986.

Mick Fetkovich specializes in unconventional reservoir forecasting and characterization, waterfloods, pressure transient analysis, rate transient analysis, and field studies utilizing reservoir simulation and classical reservoir engineering techniques. He worked for QRI, analyzing multiple PEMEX-operated offshore carbonate fields and used rate transient analysis, pressure transient analysis, and reservoir simulation to understand the performance of these fields. Senior Advisor for DEEPCAST, a big data analytics company.
